Hamilton, your gateway to the central North Island.
Hamilton city is the central point of New Zealand’s Waikato region, through which flows the mighty Waikato River. It is a city built to support agriculture and farming, with a strong kiwi atmosphere- friendly, casual and laidback. This doesn’t make it boring- Hamilton is increasingly becoming a vibrant urban centre, and is New Zealand’s largest inland city.
The river flows through the middle of Hamilton, separating the city centre into Hamilton West and Hamilton East. The western side is home to the CBD and most of the favourite shopping spots, whilst on the eastern shore is the University of Waikato and its plethora of students. Stores, bars and restaurants are concentrated along Anglesea and Victoria Streets which run parallel to the river, and there are riverside paths and parks on both banks. The Hamilton Gardens are also on the river banks south of the city centre, and are a large park home to a collection of various different gardens.
As you head out of town, suburbs give way to the farms and fields which are the lifeblood of the Waikato region and New Zealand as a whole. Mystery Creek Events centre hosts the Agricultural Field Days every year, which attracts thousands of people to buy, sell, enjoy and exhibit all things farming-related. There are other annual events which take place at this huge venue every year, including the largest Christian music festival outside of the United States. South of the city is the charming town of Cambridge and the flat, well-maintained fields are New Zealand’s stud country- many a thoroughbred is bred here.
Hamilton works well as an alternative motorhome pick up location for those uninterested in the hustle and bustle of Auckland. A relaxing road trip from here will show you the spirit of rural New Zealand, and Lake Taupo, beachy Tauranga, cultural Rotorua and the stunning Central Plateau mountain range are within easy reach.
