Christchurch, your southern adventure starts here.

Christchurch is a city rebuilt, and its spirit has shone through after an earthquake in 2010. Stately and friendly, this southern city has earned the nickname of the Garden City thanks to the many trees which forest the suburbs spread over the Canterbury Plains. The Avon River meanders through the CBD, and to the east, the suburbs reach the coast of the South Pacific Ocean.

Much of Christchurch’s CBD is considered a red zone due to the earthquake damage, but Christchurch’s businesses have been creative in adapting to the situation, constructing a new and innovative shopping village out of containers which is currently brightening up the central area.  A transitional Cathedral is being built primarily of heavy duty cardboard tubes, designed by architect Shigeru Ban. This work of art replaces the stone cathedral which was once the centerpiece of the city. A favourite for visitors and locals alike is Hagley Park, the huge green area beside the CBD which is home to the Canterbury Museum, Victoria Lake and the Christchurch Botanical Gardens.

New Brighton is Christchurch’s beachside suburb, once a distinct coastal village. It has a sandy beach with good surfing, lifeguard-supervised swimming areas, parks, an iconic pier and everything else one could need for a pleasant day at the seaside. Between Christchurch and its port, Lyttleton, lie the beautiful rolling Port Hills, a prominent feature of the city’s landscape and a great place for a hike. Christchurch is the gateway to Antarctica, and the International Arctic Centre is an excellent place to visit with children as it is both fun and informative, and you can experience Antarctic weather and take a ride in the All-Terrain vehicles used on the cold continent.

For a South Island road trip, Christchurch is a great starting point. Most flights to the island land here, and its central location means it is only a few hours’ drive to wherever you would like to go.
